What Volvo's Equal Protection Claim Does and Doesn't Prove

Volvo says its research proves its cars protect women and men equally. The research is good and it proves less than the headline says: it compares older Volvos to newer Volvos, not a Volvo to an EV9 or an R1S. Across five large electric SUVs the published crash results are strong, with the EX90 at 92% from Euro NCAP and the EV9 and IONIQ 9 at 84%, and not one of those numbers tells you whether a car protects a woman as well as a man. The data to answer that mostly already exists; nobody publishes it in a form a buyer can read.
