Understanding how Canadians research and buy electric vehicles

EVD2 monitors public Reddit discussions across Canadian communities to better understand how real people think about, research, and ultimately decide on electric vehicles. This helps us build a more useful platform.

We read conversations in subreddits like r/PersonalFinanceCanada, r/electricvehicles, r/ontario, r/vancouver, and others where Canadians openly share their EV questions, frustrations, and experiences. These conversations are valuable because they represent the unfiltered reality of what it is like to shop for an EV in Canada right now.

What we learn from Reddit

Reddit threads reveal the actual questions Canadians ask when considering an EV. Not the questions manufacturers think people ask, but the real ones:

  • ?Rebate confusion — "Does the federal rebate stack with the Quebec one?" "Did EVAP replace iZEV?" "What's the MSRP cap?"
  • ?Winter range anxiety — "How much range do you actually lose in a Manitoba winter?" "Is 400 km rated range enough for Ottawa?"
  • ?Model comparisons — "Ioniq 5 vs EV6 vs Model Y for a family in BC?" "What's the cheapest EV that qualifies for the rebate?"
  • ?Charging practicality — "Can you own an EV in a condo with no charger?" "How's the charging network on the Trans-Canada?"
  • ?Chinese EV uncertainty — "Will BYD actually come to Canada?" "What happens with the 100% tariff?"

How we use this

Every question we see on Reddit helps us make EVD2 better. When we notice the same question asked repeatedly, it tells us something is missing from our platform. Specific examples:

  • Rebate confusion led us to build the grants and incentives page with province-by-province breakdowns
  • Comparison questions led to the vehicle comparison tool
  • "What's the cheapest EV?" questions shaped our price range filter and value rankings
  • The FAQ page is built directly from the most common Reddit questions

What we do not do

We do not use bots to post or comment on Reddit
We do not scrape private or restricted communities
We do not collect or store personal information about Reddit users
We do not send automated messages or spam
We do not manipulate votes or game the algorithm

We only read publicly available posts through Reddit's public API. The same content anyone can see by visiting the subreddit. When we do participate in discussions, it is always as a real person, offering genuinely helpful information.

Why transparency matters

We publish this page because we think tools that monitor social media should be transparent about it. If you see us participating in a Reddit thread, we are there because someone asked a question we can genuinely help with. If we mention EVD2, it is because the tool is directly relevant to what the person is looking for. We would rather be helpful once than spammy ten times.
