How many chargers will this service carry?

"We do not have the electrical capacity" is the most common answer a condo board or a cottage neighbour gives, and it is usually a design answer rather than a fact. Rule 8-500 of the Canadian Electrical Code lets an energy management system hold several chargers inside the room a service already has. This works out what that means for yours.

What that serves

At 40 km of driving a day, the 80 A left on this service covers about 32 cars a night. That is the number worth quoting to a board, because it answers whether the building is served rather than how many boxes fit on a wall.

Serving 32 cars means 32 charge points, not 6. The 6 above is how many draw power at the same moment; an EVEMS works through the rest over the night, which is how a building serves more cars than it can charge at once.

No car is ever divided below 12 A, which is roughly a day's driving over a night. Below that a shared design starts failing the people it is for.

This is not a load calculation

A real load calculation follows Section 8 of the Canadian Electrical Code, counts every connected load, and is signed by someone who can be held to it. This takes that number as an input and answers the question that comes after it. Bring the result to an electrician as a starting point, not as a conclusion.

What Rule 8-500 actually says

An electric vehicle energy management system monitors the service and controls the chargers so the total never exceeds what the feeder can carry. Where it does that, those chargers do not have to be counted in the calculated load at all. That is the sentence that turns ten cars on one feeder from a workaround into a normal design, and it is why a full service is not the end of the conversation.

What to ask for

Ask your electrician or your board for the calculated load on the service, then ask whether an EVEMS was considered before a service upgrade was quoted. A service upgrade is a five-figure project. Load management is usually a fraction of that, and on a building where nobody drives more than a commute, it is the better design anyway.
