Who is actually buying EVs in Canada

Not sales targets or announcements — vehicles registered, which is the moment a car reaches a driveway. Statistics Canada publishes this quarterly by fuel type and province.

Statistics Canada publishes no figures for them in this series. The coordinates are valid and the values come back empty, every quarter. That is a gap in the source, not a zero — do not read it as an absence of EVs.

Methodology

Source: Statistics Canada table 20-10-0025-01, new motor vehicle registrations by fuel type, vehicle type and geography. It replaced table 20-10-0024-01, archived as of the first quarter of 2025.

Registrations count vehicles entering service, which is a different thing from the two import series on this site. Our Chinese EV imports tracker measures customs value and quota permits at the border. A vehicle can be imported in one quarter and registered in another, and most vehicles registered here were never part of that lane at all.

Zero-emission covers battery electric and plug-in hybrid. The totals are published by Statistics Canada rather than summed by us, and the ingest refuses any quarter where the parts do not add up to the published total.

Statistics Canada revises earlier quarters as late returns arrive, so figures can move after first publication. Our worker re-reads the last twelve quarters weekly and updates any that changed. These figures last changed on September 8, 2026.
