The province with the most fast chargers is the one where they are most crowded
Quebec runs 2,989 DC fast ports, about a third of every fast port in the country. It also has 98 plug-in vehicles per fast port, the worst ratio of any province. Building the most chargers and having the least charging are not contradictory when the fleet grows faster than the network.
Nationally that number is 75 vehicles per fast port, across 14,190 public stations, 9,156 fast ports and 30,120 level 2 ports.

The bottom of this table is not a leaderboard. Northwest Territories has the lowest ratio in the country at 9 vehicles per fast port, on 103 plug-in vehicles and 11 fast ports. A low ratio can mean plenty of chargers or very few electric cars, and at that scale it is the second. The regions at the top of the table are the ones where people actually bought EVs, which is why they are the ones under pressure.
The two columns disagree on purpose. Quebec is worse than Ontario per fast port and better per port overall, because Ontario has far more level 2. Level 2 is the right answer for a workplace or a hotel and the wrong answer for a highway stop, so neither column is the number — which one matters depends on whether you are parked or passing through.
Nunavut is missing from the table entirely: it has 3 plug-in vehicles on the road and no public charging station in the dataset at all. A row of zeroes would have been easier to read and would have implied we had measured something.
Vehicle counts are Statistics Canada’s for 2024, the most recent year published; charger counts are current. The fleet has grown since, so every ratio here is a floor on how many vehicles share a charger today.
How far you can get from a fast charger
For every point on the Trans-Canada network, sampled every 2 km, this measures the distance to the nearest DC fast charger. The worst point in Ontario is 118 km from one, which implies a stretch of roughly 236 km with nothing in it.
Ontario carries the most Trans-Canada mileage of any province and has the thinnest coverage of it. Quebec and Prince Edward Island have a fast charger within 25 km of every sampled point on their sections.

These are straight-line distances from the road to a charger, not driving distances to it. A charger 60 km away as the crow flies can be a much longer detour, or on the far side of a lake. Every figure in this table therefore understates the problem.
The gap column is arithmetic, not measurement. A point 118 km from chargers on either side sits in a stretch about twice that long, so it is a fair inference and a bad quotation. We did not drive it.
Who actually runs the fast chargers
Ranked by fast ports rather than by sites, because a network of a thousand single-plug locations is not the same as a network you can road-trip on. Tesla holds 32.4% of Canada’s fast ports from 277 sites — about 11 ports per site, where most networks average barely one.

These do not add up to the number of stations, and are not meant to. A site with both CCS and CHAdeMO is counted under each, because what a driver needs to know is whether their plug is there, not whether it is the only one.
991 stations offer a NACS connector while Tesla runs 277 sites, so most of the NACS plugs in Canada are now on somebody else’s hardware. That difference is the transition, visible in the data rather than announced in a press release.
CHAdeMO is still on 1,802 stations. It is the connector for the older Nissan LEAF, no new vehicle uses it, and it will be the first to disappear.
Where these numbers come from
Charger counts are from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory Alternative Fuel Stations dataset, the same data behind Natural Resources Canada’s own charging station locator, filtered to country=CA, fuel_type=ELEC, status=E (available), access=public. Read 2026-09-08.
Vehicle counts are Statistics Canada table 23-10-0308-01, light-duty battery electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles registered, reference year 2024. Conventional hybrids are excluded: a car that cannot plug in places no demand on a charger.
Highway geometry is from OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL 1.0, route relations on the Trans-Canada network, sampled every 2 km and clipped to each province.
The awkward part is that the two halves of the ratio have different dates. Charger counts are current; vehicle counts are Statistics Canada’s most recent published year. We would rather join a current number to a lagging one and say so than wait a year for a tidier comparison, but it does mean every ratio here is a floor.
